Why Video | EP 07 – ‘Inclusive’, Not just a word

Inclusivity and diversity are such buzz words.

I feel it has also become just a box to tick, rather than being genuine.

I’m going to put a challenge to you and say that you can’t tick that box if you’re not authentic about your intention.. Ha! There’s another buzz word for you. Authentic.

What we are looking for is authentic inclusivity in our selection of diversity on and off the screen.

Taste Creative and BusStop films are leading the charge on this and they’ve given me food for thought that I want to share.

When I say inclusivity I am not just talking about making sure we have an array of nationalities on screen as actors, but we are giving any hard working human a chance to be involved in a production.

It’s important to be aware of any limitations and needs that that a human has, and you give them the tools they need to succeed in their role. When you think about it, people like to contribute in meaningful ways, and this should be no different no matter someone’s background or ability. And this means holding no bias towards someone because they are different to you. If they are willing to show up and put in the work, then they will be a great asset to your team.

In regards to story development, bringing in the experts, who are those with lived experience,  is especially important when you are telling the story from a specific point of view. Who’s authentic voice is behind the narrative that understands that world? It is so important that they are given a front seat in the development of the story. Without their voice, your audience will see through your story and it won’t have the impact you are after because it can’t be true. If you are the producer, director or writer you need to listen to those advising you. Invite feedback from those with lived experience.

I do a lot of video production case studies and narrative re-enactments for learning and education purposes. So it’s important for these stories to not just be entertaining, but are inspired by real events. And we can’t do that if we don’t seek out the experts with lived experience and invite them into the journey. If you combine your skills you will end up with a more well rounded piece that really speaks to people and makes a difference.
